Ultra-Processed Food
Full Form of UPF
What is UPF?
Ultra-Processed Food refers to industrial formulations made mostly from substances derived from foods, with little or no whole food content. These products undergo multiple processes and typically contain five or more ingredients including preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial flavours, colours, and sweeteners. Common examples widely available across India include instant noodles, packaged snacks, soft drinks, ready-to-eat meals, biscuits, and sugary breakfast cereals. The concept was popularised by the NOVA food classification system developed by Brazilian researchers and is now widely used by nutritionists, dietitians, and public health experts throughout India. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has been actively working on front-of-pack labelling rules to alert consumers about UPF consumption, as growing studies link high UPF intake to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Understanding UPF classification is essential for students appearing in CBSE Biology, Home Science examinations, and competitive exams like NEET where nutrition chapters feature regularly. The Indian Council of Medical Research has also issued dietary guidelines advising citizens to limit UPF intake and prefer traditional whole foods.
