Recommended Dietary Allowance
Full Form of RDA
What is RDA?
Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) refers to the daily intake level of essential nutrients sufficient to meet the requirements of nearly all (97–98%) healthy individuals in a specific age and gender group. In India, RDA is established by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) to guide dietary planning, food fortification, and public health policies. These values are used by dietitians, nutritionists, and government programs like the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) to ensure balanced nutrition. RDA varies based on age, gender, physiological status (pregnancy, lactation), and activity level. The first Indian RDA was published in 1958 and is revised periodically. For exams like NEET PG, UPSC, and food technology interviews, RDA is a cornerstone concept linking nutrition science to practical health outcomes. Understanding RDA helps in addressing malnutrition and designing therapeutic diets. The values differ from international guidelines due to India’s unique dietary patterns and prevalent deficiencies.
