Body Mass Index
Full Form of BMI
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index, commonly known as BMI, is a numerical value derived from an individual's weight and height. It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. BMI is a widely used screening tool to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. In India, BMI plays a crucial role in public health initiatives, clinical assessments, and epidemiological studies. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare often references BMI in guidelines for non-communicable disease prevention. Doctors and nutritionists across India use BMI to evaluate patient health risks associated with lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Despite its simplicity, BMI does not directly measure body fat, so it is often used alongside other metrics like waist circumference. The concept originated in the 19th century by Adolphe Quetelet, but it gained global acceptance through the World Health Organization. In Indian medical entrance exams like NEET and AIIMS nursing, questions on BMI calculation and interpretation are common, making it an important topic for aspiring healthcare professionals.
