United Nations Human Settlements Programme
Full Form of UNHABITAT
What is UNHABITAT?
UN-Habitat, officially known as the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is a United Nations agency focused on promoting socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements. Established in 1978, it works towards adequate shelter for all and sustainable urban development. In India, UN-Habitat collaborates with central and state governments, municipal bodies, and civil society on projects related to affordable housing, slum upgrading, urban planning, climate resilience, and smart city initiatives. It is prominently involved in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities). The agency also supports India’s flagship programmes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (urban) and the Smart Cities Mission. Its reports and guidelines are widely used by urban planners, policymakers, and researchers. For competitive exams like UPSC, knowledge of UN-Habitat and its role in Indian urban development is relevant under the international organizations and urban governance sections. The programme also organizes global events such as the World Urban Forum, where Indian cities often showcase best practices.
