Unmanned Landing Zone
Full Form of ULZ
What is ULZ?
An Unmanned Landing Zone, commonly abbreviated as ULZ, is a designated area of terrain prepared and marked for the landing and takeoff of unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones or UAVs. In India, ULZs are increasingly relevant as the country rapidly expands its indigenous drone programme under the Make in India initiative and the Digital Sky platform managed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The Indian Armed Forces, particularly the Army and Air Force, have been establishing ULZs in forward areas, high-altitude sectors like Ladakh, and along the western border to support surveillance, logistics resupply, and tactical operations without risking human pilots. These zones are typically marked with specific visual aids, coordinate waypoints, and communication protocols to ensure safe autonomous or remote-piloted operations. ULZs play a critical role in modern warfare, disaster response, and humanitarian aid delivery across difficult terrain. For students preparing for defence examinations such as CDS, AFCAT, and NDA, understanding unmanned systems terminology including ULZ forms a small but important part of the general awareness and current affairs sections.
