Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Full Form of UAV
What is UAV?
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, commonly known as UAV, refers to an aircraft that operates without a human pilot onboard. These aircraft are controlled remotely by an operator on the ground or fly autonomously through pre-programmed flight plans using onboard sensors, GPS systems, and artificial intelligence. In India, UAVs play a significant and growing role in both defence and civilian sectors. The Indian Armed Forces, including the Indian Air Force, Army, and Navy, rely on UAVs for surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeted operations, with indigenous platforms like the DRDO-developed Rustom, Tapas, and Aakash drones strengthening self-reliance under the Make in India initiative. On the civilian side, UAVs are widely used in agriculture for crop monitoring and pesticide spraying, in disaster management for assessing flood and cyclone damage, and by Indian startups for delivery services, mapping, and aerial photography. The Ministry of Civil Aviation introduced the Digital Sky platform and liberalised drone rules in 2021 to regulate UAV operations. UAVs frequently appear in UPSC, NDA, CDS, and SSC examinations.
