What is UAS?

Unmanned Aircraft System, commonly abbreviated as UAS, refers to an integrated setup that includes a remotely piloted aircraft, the ground-based controller, and the communication link connecting the two. In India, UAS technology has gained tremendous momentum following the release of the Drone Rules 2021 by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which simplified the regulatory framework for operating drones commercially. The country has actively promoted UAS adoption across agriculture for crop monitoring and spraying, logistics for medical and package delivery through initiatives like the Medicine from the Sky project in Telangana, and surveillance for law enforcement agencies. India has also developed indigenous drone platforms such as the DRDO Netra and is pushing for self-reliance in UAS manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. The Digital Sky platform serves as the central online registry for drone registration and operator approvals. UAS frequently appears in competitive examinations including UPSC, SSC, banking, and defence entrance tests, where questions often focus on drone regulations, classifications by weight category, and airspace restrictions governing their operation in Indian airspace.
