Upper Limit Normal
Full Form of ULN
What is ULN?
ULN stands for Upper Limit Normal, a standard medical reference value used in clinical pathology and laboratory diagnostics. It represents the highest value within the normal reference range for a particular substance or parameter measured in a blood test, urine test, or other laboratory investigation. In India, ULN is commonly printed on pathology reports from labs like Thyrocare, SRL Diagnostics, Metropolis, and Lal Path Labs, helping doctors and patients interpret whether a test result is within healthy limits or elevated. For instance, liver enzymes such as ALT and AST, kidney markers like creatinine, and lipid profile components all have specific ULN values against which patient results are compared. When a reading exceeds the ULN, it often signals an underlying condition requiring further medical evaluation. Medical students, lab technicians, and healthcare professionals across India frequently encounter this term during their training and clinical practice. Understanding ULN values is also useful for NEET PG, AIIMS, and other competitive medical entrance examinations where interpretation of lab values is tested.
