Liver Function Test
Full Form of LFT
What is LFT?
A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a panel of blood tests that measure the levels of various enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver. In India, LFTs are widely used to screen for liver damage, monitor chronic conditions like hepatitis B and C, assess the effects of medications (especially antitubercular drugs), and evaluate alcohol-related liver disease. They are commonly ordered in hospitals, diagnostic labs, and during routine health check-ups across both urban and rural healthcare settings. The test typically includes markers such as ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, albumin, and total protein. Elevated levels can indicate inflammation, obstruction, or reduced liver function. For medical and paramedical students in India, LFT interpretation is a key topic in biochemistry and pathology exams, including NEET PG, USMLE, and nursing qualifications. Early detection through LFTs is critical in a country with high rates of viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis. The test is inexpensive, widely available, and often included in preventive health packages offered by Indian hospitals and diagnostic chains.
