Anti-Satellite Test
Full Form of AST
What is AST?
AST stands for Anti-Satellite Test, a military exercise designed to destroy or disable a satellite in orbit. In the Indian context, the term gained prominence with Mission Shakti, conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on March 27, 2019. This test successfully intercepted a live satellite in low Earth orbit using a kinetic kill vehicle launched from a modified Prithvi missile. India became the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to demonstrate such capability. ASTs are used to showcase a nation's ability to protect its space assets and deter adversaries from targeting its satellites. The test is conducted under strict protocols to minimise space debris and ensure adherence to international norms. In India, AST is a topic of strategic discussion in defence and space policy circles. For competitive exams like UPSC and defence exams, AST is a key current affairs topic, often featured in questions on India's space security and military advancements.
