Universal Health Coverage
Full Form of UHC
What is UHC?
Universal Health Coverage, commonly abbreviated as UHC, refers to a healthcare system that ensures all individuals and communities receive essential medical services without suffering financial hardship. In India, UHC has become a central focus of the National Health Policy 2017, which envisions comprehensive healthcare access for the entire population regardless of their economic status. The concept gained significant momentum with the launch of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, one of the world's largest government-funded health insurance schemes, currently covering over 50 crore vulnerable beneficiaries. UHC in India encompasses preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative care delivered through an expanded network of public hospitals, primary health centres, and empanelled private providers. The World Health Organization actively supports India's UHC initiatives as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, which targets healthy lives and well-being for all by 2030. Achieving UHC remains challenging due to India's vast population, regional disparities, and shortage of healthcare workers, though digital health initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission are accelerating progress considerably.
