What is SFJ?

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) is an international advocacy group founded in 2007 by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a US-based lawyer of Indian origin. Headquartered in New York, the organisation campaigns for the creation of Khalistan, a separate Sikh homeland proposed to be carved out of Indian territory, primarily Punjab. SFJ has been at the centre of several controversies in India, especially for its alleged role in the 2020-2021 farmers' agitation, when it reportedly backed the protest movement and released provocative posters and videos. The Indian government declared SFJ an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, in July 2019, citing its anti-national activities and efforts to destabilise the country. Its founder Pannun has been the subject of Indian investigations, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered multiple cases against the outfit and its associates. Questions on SFJ frequently appear in competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and state public service commissions under current affairs, polity, and national security sections.
