What is ISI?
The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a premier public university and research institute dedicated to the study and advancement of statistics, mathematics, and related sciences. Founded in 1931 by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata, ISI was declared an institution of national importance by an act of Parliament in 1959. It operates under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India. ISI is globally recognized for its contributions to statistical theory, applied statistics, and data science. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs through its main campus in Kolkata and regional centers in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Tezpur. It also conducts the prestigious ISI entrance exam for admission to its B.Stat (Honours) and M.Stat programs, which are highly sought after by students across India. ISI plays a critical role in India's statistical infrastructure, including training for government statisticians and conducting large-scale surveys like the National Sample Survey. For competitive exams like UPSC and RBI Grade B, knowledge of ISI and its contributions is often tested in general awareness sections.
