What is IIT?
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a network of autonomous public technical universities located across India, governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. They are considered the country's premier engineering and technology institutions, known for their rigorous academic standards, cutting-edge research, and highly selective admission process. The first IIT was established at Kharagpur in 1951, and today there are twenty-three IITs, including renowned ones in Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, and Roorkee. IITs offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various fields of engineering, technology, sciences, and management. Their role in India is immense: they produce a significant portion of the nation's top engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and leaders in the tech industry, both domestically and globally. IITs are also hubs for innovation and incubation, driving India's startup ecosystem. Admission to undergraduate programs is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, one of the most challenging and competitive exams in the world, which is relevant for students preparing for engineering careers. The IIT brand carries immense prestige and opens doors to excellent career opportunities in both public and private sectors.
