Indian Institute of Management
Full Form of IIM
What is IIM?
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) refers to a group of premier autonomous public business schools in India, established by the Government of India to provide high-quality management education and research. The first IIM was set up in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1961, and today there are 21 IIMs spread across the country, including IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Lucknow. These institutes offer postgraduate, doctoral, and executive education programmes in management, with the flagship two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) being equivalent to an MBA. IIMs are known for their rigorous curriculum, world-class faculty, and strong industry linkages, producing leaders who contribute significantly to India's corporate and public sectors. Admission to most IIMs is based on the Common Admission Test (CAT), a highly competitive national-level exam, along with academic profile and personal interview. For students preparing for competitive exams like CAT, understanding the role of IIMs is crucial as they represent the pinnacle of management education in India. IIMs also engage in consultancy, research, and policy formulation, influencing economic and business practices across the nation.
