Preliminary
Full Form of PRE
What is PRE?
PRE, short for Preliminary, is a term used in Indian competitive examinations to denote the initial screening stage. It is most commonly associated with the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), where the Preliminary examination (commonly called the 'Prelims') serves as the first filter before the Mains and Interview stages. Besides UPSC, many other national and state-level exams, such as those by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Banking, and engineering entrance tests like JEE Main, use a preliminary phase to shortlist candidates for advanced rounds. The PRE stage typically consists of objective-type multiple-choice questions testing general awareness, reasoning, and subject-specific knowledge. Its primary role is to manage the large number of applicants efficiently, ensuring only the most competent proceed. Candidates often refer to this as 'giving the PRE' or 'clearing the PRE' in everyday conversation. For aspirants preparing for government jobs or higher education, understanding the pattern and syllabus of the PRE is crucial, as it sets the foundation for subsequent stages. In exam contexts, 'PRE' is widely used in study materials, coaching centres, and online forums.
