What is GATE?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. Primarily, GATE serves as a gateway for admission to postgraduate programs such as M.Tech, M.E., and Ph.D. in engineering, technology, architecture, and science at IITs, NITs, and other prestigious institutions across India. Beyond academia, GATE scores are also widely used by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ONGC, NTPC, and BHEL for recruitment to entry-level engineering positions. The examination tests a candidate's comprehensive understanding of undergraduate-level subjects, along with their analytical and problem-solving abilities. GATE is held once a year in a computer-based mode, covering 30 different subject papers ranging from aerospace engineering to life sciences. With its high difficulty level and extensive syllabus, qualifying GATE is considered a mark of excellence in engineering education. The score remains valid for three years, making it a crucial milestone for students aspiring for higher studies or secure government jobs. Its relevance in competitive exam preparation lies in the fact that many institutions mandate a valid GATE score for fellowships and stipends as well.
