Permanent Commission for Women
Full Form of PCW
What is PCW?
Permanent Commission for Women (PCW) refers to the policy allowing women officers in the Indian Armed Forces to serve until retirement on par with their male counterparts. Historically, women were only offered Short Service Commission (SSC) for limited tenure. In February 2020, the Supreme Court of India upheld the government's decision to grant PCW to women officers in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, ending decades of gender discrimination. This landmark judgment applies to all women officers who had served or were serving under SSC, regardless of their years of service. PCW is a transformative step towards gender equality in the defence sector, enabling women to occupy command roles and access pension benefits. It is frequently discussed in defence reforms, UPSC examination current affairs, and policy debates on women empowerment. The implementation involves selection boards, medical tests, and training adjustments. PCW has also spurred similar changes in paramilitary forces and police services. In India, it remains a key reference point for inclusive military service and constitutional equality.
