Non-Commissioned Officer
Full Form of NCO
What is NCO?
A Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) is a military officer who has been promoted from the enlisted ranks, holding authority over lower-ranked personnel without a commission from the head of state. In the Indian Armed Forces—including the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy—NCOs form the backbone of unit discipline, training, and operational execution. They typically hold ranks such as Lance Naik, Naik, Havaldar in the army, or equivalent in other services. NCOs are responsible for leading small teams, maintaining equipment, and ensuring daily duties are performed efficiently. The promotion to NCO is based on experience, performance, and passing trade tests, rather than a direct officer commission. This system is used across all branches of the Indian military, in both peacetime garrison and field deployments. For competitive exams like the Combined Defence Services (CDS) or Army Cadet College (ACC), understanding the hierarchy—including NCO and Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO)—is essential. NCOs are respected for their practical knowledge and serve as key intermediaries between officers and jawans, ensuring smooth communication and combat readiness.
