Junior Commissioned Officer
Full Form of JCO
What is JCO?
Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) is a rank in the Indian Armed Forces, primarily in the Indian Army, but also used in the Indian Navy and Air Force. JCOs hold a position between Non‑Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Commissioned Officers. They are promoted from the ranks of NCOs based on experience, leadership, and specialised training. In the Indian Army, JCOs serve as platoon commanders, company quartermasters, or hold staff appointments. They are equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant in the British Army but have distinct responsibilities and privileges in the Indian context. JCOs are addressed as 'Saheb' and wear a distinctive star on their insignia. This rank is specific to the Indian military and plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between soldiers and officers, ensuring discipline and operational efficiency. The term is commonly used in defence examinations such as the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and AFCAT, where candidates must understand the hierarchy and duties. JCOs are also found in auxiliary forces like the Territorial Army. Their role is vital in combat, training, and administration, making them indispensable to India's defence structure.
