Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus
Full Form of MNT
What is MNT?
Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) is a severe and often fatal infectious disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which enters the body through contaminated wounds or unhygienic delivery practices. In India, MNT was a major public health concern, particularly in rural and underserved areas where access to clean delivery and vaccination was limited. The Government of India, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, launched an intensive MNT elimination program focusing on immunizing pregnant women and ensuring clean delivery practices. India was officially declared MNT-free in 2015 after achieving a neonatal tetanus mortality rate of less than 1 per 1,000 live births in all districts. The term is widely used in health ministry reports, national health surveys, and international health documents. For competitive exams like UPSC and state PCS, MNT elimination is a landmark achievement in India’s public health history and is often cited in questions on maternal and child health programs.
