National Health Mission
Full Form of NHM
What is NHM?
The National Health Mission (NHM) is a flagship program of the Government of India, launched in 2013 by merging the earlier National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM). It aims to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to all citizens, especially vulnerable groups in rural and urban areas. The mission focuses on strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure, reducing maternal and child mortality, controlling communicable and non-communicable diseases, and improving health outcomes through community participation. NHM operates across all states and union territories, funding health facilities such as Sub-Centres, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and Community Health Centres (CHCs). It is a key topic in competitive exams like UPSC, state PSCs, and health sector exams, often featuring questions on its objectives, components, and achievements. NHM has significantly contributed to India's progress in healthcare, notably through initiatives like Janani Suraksha Yojana and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram.
