Maternal and Neonatal Mortality
Full Form of MMN
What is MMN?
Maternal and Neonatal Mortality (MMN) refers to death rates among pregnant women and newborn infants within the first 28 days of life. This composite metric is critical for assessing the quality of maternal and child healthcare systems. In India, MMN has been a key focus of national health programmes such as Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and the National Health Mission (NHM), which aim to reduce preventable deaths through institutional deliveries, skilled birth attendance, and emergency obstetric care. The term is widely used in public health reports, policy documents, and studies by organisations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Sample Registration System (SRS) of India. High MMN rates are often linked to anaemia, haemorrhage, infections, and lack of access to timely care, especially in rural and underserved areas. Improvement in MMN indicators is tracked under the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) targets. For competitive exams like UPSC and health service examinations, questions frequently appear on trends in maternal and neonatal mortality, government interventions, and international comparisons.
