Infant Mortality Rate
Full Form of IMR
What is IMR?
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is a key demographic and health indicator that measures the number of deaths of infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births in a given year. In India, IMR is a critical metric used by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the World Health Organization, and state governments to evaluate the effectiveness of maternal and child health programs such as Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) and the National Health Mission (NHM). It is also a core parameter in tracking progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to reduce neonatal and under-five mortality. IMR is widely cited in census reports, Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletins, and competitive examinations like UPSC civil services, state PCS, and IBPS. A declining IMR reflects better access to antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, immunization coverage, and nutrition. As of 2023, India's IMR stands at around 28 per 1,000 live births, though significant disparities persist between rural and urban areas and among states. Understanding IMR is essential for public health policymakers, researchers, and aspirants preparing for exams that test knowledge of social sector indicators.
