Total Fertility Rate
Full Form of TFR
What is TFR?
Total Fertility Rate, commonly abbreviated as TFR, represents the average number of children that a woman would give birth to over her entire reproductive lifetime, assuming the prevailing age-specific fertility rates remain constant throughout her childbearing years. It is one of the most important demographic indicators tracked globally, and India has been monitoring it closely through the National Family Health Survey, the Sample Registration System, and the Registrar General of India. TFR plays a vital role in shaping India's population policy, family welfare programmes, and maternal and child health interventions. The country has recorded a remarkable decline in its TFR, dropping from roughly 3.8 in the 1990s to around 2.0 in the latest NFHS-5 survey, although significant regional disparities persist with states like Bihar, UP, and Madhya Pradesh still recording higher figures. The replacement level TFR is 2.1, and reaching this benchmark is considered a key milestone in a country's demographic transition. TFR data is frequently referenced in UPSC, SSC, and state public service examinations, particularly within demography, sociology, and general studies papers.
