Mikoyan-Gurevich
Full Form of MIG
What is MIG?
MIG is an acronym for Mikoyan-Gurevich, a Soviet aircraft design bureau that produced a series of fighter jets widely used by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from the 1960s onward. The IAF inducted the MiG-21 as its first supersonic fighter in 1963, later adding variants like the MiG-27, MiG-29, and the naval MiG-29K. These aircraft formed the backbone of India’s air defence during multiple conflicts, including the 1971 war with Pakistan. Despite aging fleets, the MiG-21 continues to serve in limited numbers, while the MiG-29 remains a frontline combat aircraft. MIG jets are also operated by the Indian Navy from aircraft carriers. The term “MIG” is commonly used in Indian defence discussions, military aviation training, and competitive exams like the UPSC CDS and NDA, where questions about India’s fighter fleet often appear. In recent years, India has phased out older MiG variants due to safety concerns and upgraded remaining aircraft with modern avionics. The legacy of MIG in India is a mix of historical significance and ongoing operational relevance, reflecting decades of Indo-Russian defence cooperation.
