Military Headquarters
Full Form of MHQ
What is MHQ?
Military Headquarters (MHQ) is the central command and administrative hub of the Indian Army. It is responsible for strategic planning, operational control, and coordination of all land-based military forces across the country. Located in New Delhi alongside the Ministry of Defence, MHQ oversees the seven operational commands of the Indian Army, each headed by a General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. The MHQ works closely with the Chief of Defence Staff and the three service headquarters to ensure integrated defence efforts. It also liaises with civil administration during national emergencies, disaster relief, and internal security operations. The term MHQ is commonly used in defence documents, recruitment notifications, and during military exercises. For students preparing for competitive exams such as CDS, NDA, or AFCAT, understanding the structure and role of MHQ is essential as questions often appear on command hierarchy and defence organization in India. The headquarters is the nerve centre where major policy decisions regarding force modernisation, deployment, and logistics are made. Its efficient functioning directly impacts the readiness and effectiveness of the Indian Army in safeguarding the nation's borders and interests.
