Local Health Unit
Full Form of LHU
What is LHU?
A Local Health Unit (LHU) is a primary healthcare facility operating at the community or block level in India, typically under the National Health Mission (NHM). It serves as the first point of contact for rural and semi-urban populations, delivering essential services such as maternal and child health, immunisation, family planning, and treatment of common illnesses. LHUs are often staffed by nurses, midwives, and community health workers, and they play a critical role in disease surveillance and health awareness campaigns. In the Indian healthcare hierarchy, an LHU usually functions as a sub-centre or a mini-primary health centre, bridging the gap between villages and larger facilities like Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs). LHUs are especially relevant in states with high rural density, where they help decentralise healthcare delivery. For students preparing for medical or public health exams (e.g., NEET PG, AIIMS, UPSC), understanding the structure and functions of LHUs is important for questions on health administration and community medicine. The term is widely used in government health reports, NHM guidelines, and research papers on Indian primary care.
