Community Health Centre
Full Form of CHC
What is CHC?
A Community Health Centre (CHC) is a secondary-level healthcare facility in India that serves as a referral unit for Primary Health Centres (PHCs) within a block. Typically covering a population of 80,000 to 1.2 lakh in rural areas, a CHC provides specialist care in fields such as medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, and anaesthesia, along with diagnostic services like X-ray and laboratory tests. Established under the National Health Mission (NHM), CHCs are crucial for reducing the burden on district hospitals by offering inpatient and outpatient services closer to communities. Each CHC is mandated to have 30 beds, an operation theatre, and a labour room. They also implement national health programmes for communicable and non-communicable diseases. Despite challenges like staff shortages and infrastructure gaps, CHCs play a pivotal role in India’s public health system, especially in rural areas. For medical students and public health professionals, understanding CHC functions is vital for competitive exams like NEET PG, UPSC, and state PSC exams, where questions on healthcare delivery systems frequently appear. The CHC model is part of India's three-tier primary healthcare system — Sub-Centre, PHC, and CHC — aiming to achieve universal health coverage.
