What is JDY?
Jan Dhan Yojana (JDY), officially known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), is a national financial inclusion mission launched by the Government of India in August 2014. It aims to provide affordable access to banking services such as savings accounts, overdraft facilities, RuPay debit cards, and insurance cover to all households, especially in rural and underbanked areas. The scheme ensures that every adult has a basic bank account with no minimum balance requirement, making it easier to receive direct benefit transfers (DBT) for subsidies and welfare schemes. JDY also includes an accidental insurance cover and a life insurance cover for eligible account holders. In India, JDY accounts are opened at public sector banks, regional rural banks, and some private banks. The scheme has significantly increased the country's bank penetration and helped plug leakages in government subsidies. It is frequently referenced in competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking exams, often under the topics of financial inclusion and government social welfare programs. JDY remains a cornerstone of India's inclusive financial ecosystem.
