Aadhaar Unique Identification Number
Full Form of AADHAAR
What is AADHAAR?
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to residents of India based on their biometric and demographic data. The word 'Aadhaar' in Hindi means foundation, and the number serves as a foundational identity proof across the country. Introduced in 2009, Aadhaar aims to provide a universal, portable identity that can be verified online in real-time, thereby reducing fraud and improving delivery of government subsidies and services. It is widely used for opening bank accounts, obtaining SIM cards, filing income tax returns, and receiving direct benefit transfers under schemes like LPG subsidy and PDS. Aadhaar is not a citizenship document but a proof of residence and identity. For Indian competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, knowledge about Aadhaar’s legal framework, the Aadhaar Act 2016, and its linkage with PAN and voter ID is often tested. The system has raised privacy debates, leading to Supreme Court judgments affirming its constitutional validity while restricting mandatory use to only certain government services.
