Public Distribution System
Full Form of PDS
What is PDS?
The Public Distribution System (PDS) is a government-sponsored food security program in India that distributes subsidized food and non-food items to the economically disadvantaged population. Operated jointly by the central and state governments, PDS ensures the availability of essential commodities such as wheat, rice, sugar, and kerosene at affordable prices through a network of Fair Price Shops (FPS). It plays a crucial role in stabilizing food prices, reducing hunger, and enhancing nutritional intake among Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The system is utilized across all states and union territories, with the government’s Food Corporation of India (FCI) handling procurement and storage. PDS remains a cornerstone of India’s social safety net and is frequently discussed in competitive examinations like UPSC, SSC, and banking exams, particularly regarding its reforms and challenges such as leakages and targeting errors.
