Food Corporation of India
Full Form of FCI
What is FCI?
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. Established in 1965 under the Food Corporations Act, 1964, it is the nodal agency responsible for ensuring food security in the country. FCI procures, stores, and distributes food grains—primarily wheat and rice—at minimum support prices (MSP) to farmers, and supplies these grains to the Public Distribution System (PDS) and other welfare schemes. It operates across all states and union territories, maintaining a vast network of godowns and silos. FCI plays a crucial role in stabilizing market prices, maintaining buffer stocks for emergencies, and implementing government policies like the National Food Security Act. Its operations directly impact millions of farmers and beneficiaries. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, questions on FCI’s functions, procurement norms, and storage capacity are common. Understanding FCI is essential for grasping India’s agricultural economics and food policy.
