Direct Benefit Transfer
Full Form of DBT
What is DBT?
Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at reforming the delivery system of subsidies and welfare benefits. Launched on January 1, 2013, by the Ministry of Finance, DBT leverages the Aadhaar infrastructure and digital payment systems to transfer financial benefits directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. The scheme covers over 500 central and state welfare programs, including scholarships, pension schemes, LPG subsidy (PAHAL), MGNREGA wages, and PM-KISAN. By eliminating intermediaries and leakages, DBT has significantly reduced corruption and delays, saving the exchequer thousands of crores. It is used across all states and union territories, with real-time monitoring through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, DBT is a key topic under government schemes and socio-economic development. The system also integrates with Jan Dhan accounts and mobile numbers to ensure seamless transfer. DBT has been crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic for delivering emergency cash transfers to farmers, women, and the poor. Its success has inspired other countries to adopt similar direct transfer models.
