What is PMJDY?
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is India's flagship financial inclusion scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2014. The scheme aims to provide comprehensive banking services to every unbanked household in India, ensuring access to savings accounts, need-based credit, remittance facilities, and insurance coverage. It operates as a national mission under the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, and is implemented across all urban and rural areas through public and private sector banks. PMJDY has played a transformative role in reducing financial exclusion by opening over 50 crore accounts, enabling direct benefit transfers (DBT) of subsidies, and integrating millions into the formal banking system. The scheme is particularly relevant for government exam aspirants in India, as it is frequently asked in competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking exams questions on financial inclusion and social welfare schemes.
