Indian Medical Association
Full Form of IMA
What is IMA?
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is the largest voluntary organization of medical professionals in India, founded in 1928 and headquartered in New Delhi. It represents over 3.5 lakh doctors across the country, acting as a unified voice for the medical community on issues of healthcare policy, professional ethics, and public health. The IMA is actively involved in setting standards for medical practice, organizing continuing medical education (CME) programs, and advocating for doctors' welfare and patient safety. It frequently engages with the government on matters such as the National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, vaccination drives, and disease outbreak management. The IMA also publishes medical journals and releases health advisories, especially during epidemics like dengue or COVID-19. Its state and local branches coordinate grassroots-level health awareness camps and free check-up clinics. For competitive exams like UPSC or NEET-PG, knowledge of the IMA’s role in healthcare governance and its stance on recent medical reforms is often tested. The association remains a cornerstone of organized medicine in India, bridging the gap between practitioners and policymakers.
