Indian Defence Service of Technicians
Full Form of IDST
What is IDST?
The Indian Defence Service of Technicians (IDST) is a specialised technical cadre operating under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It was created to manage the technical workforce required by the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Officers and personnel under this service handle the installation, maintenance, repair, and operational management of sophisticated military hardware such as radar systems, missile platforms, armoured vehicles, aircraft, and communication networks. The cadre plays a vital role in ensuring the operational readiness and self-sufficiency of India's defence equipment inventory, particularly in supporting the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives in defence manufacturing. Recruits are selected through competitive examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission and undergo structured technical training at recognised military and engineering institutions. The service offers a stable career for engineering graduates and diploma holders who wish to contribute to national security in a technical capacity. For aspirants preparing for civil services, NDA, CDS, and AFCAT examinations, questions on IDST frequently appear in the defence-related sections of general studies and current affairs papers.
