What is HVJ?
The HVJ pipeline, fully known as the Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur pipeline, is a landmark natural gas trunk pipeline in India. Stretching over 2,300 kilometres, it connects the liquefied natural gas terminal at Hazira in Gujarat to Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh and then to Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh. Operated by GAIL (India) Limited, this pipeline was commissioned in the 1990s and remains the backbone of the country’s natural gas transmission network. It supplies gas to fertiliser plants, power stations, and industrial consumers across northern and western India, significantly reducing dependence on liquid fuels. The HVJ pipeline is often cited in examinations related to Indian energy infrastructure, especially in UPSC, state PCS, and energy sector exams, where its role in the Gas Grid and the National Gas Pipeline Network is discussed. Its expansion under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga project has further extended connectivity to eastern India, making it a vital asset for energy security and economic growth.
