Hazira-Bijaipur-Jagdishpur
Full Form of HBJ
What is HBJ?
Hazira-Bijaipur-Jagdishpur (HBJ) is India’s longest and one of the most crucial natural gas pipelines, operated by the state-owned Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL). Stretching over 3,000 kilometers, it connects the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Hazira in Gujarat to Bijaipur in Madhya Pradesh and Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh, forming the backbone of the country’s National Gas Grid. The pipeline was commissioned in phases starting in the early 1990s and has been instrumental in supplying natural gas to power plants, fertilizer factories, and city gas distribution networks across western, central, and northern India. It supports over a dozen states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. The HBJ pipeline is also a key enabler of India’s shift towards cleaner fuel, reducing reliance on coal and imported oil. In competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, SSC, and state-level PSCs, questions on HBJ often appear under topics of energy infrastructure, gas pricing, and public sector undertakings. Its role in the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga project and connection to the eastern gas grid further highlight its strategic importance.
