Compressed Natural Gas
Full Form of CNG
What is CNG?
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a fossil fuel substitute for petrol, diesel, and LPG. It is primarily composed of methane (CH₄) stored at high pressure (200–250 bar) in cylindrical tanks, reducing volume by nearly 1%. In India, CNG has emerged as a key clean fuel, especially in the transportation sector, to combat urban air pollution. The Supreme Court’s landmark 1998 directive mandating CNG for all public transport in Delhi led to its widespread adoption. Today, CNG powers buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, and private cars across major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Ahmedabad, with over 4,500 CNG stations nationwide. Its lower carbon footprint and negligible sulfur content make it environment-friendly and cost-effective for fleet operators. Government schemes such as the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and FAME India promote CNG further. In competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PCS, CNG is often discussed under environment, energy security, and the Delhi air pollution case. Its use aligns with India’s larger goal of reducing crude oil imports and achieving a green transportation ecosystem.
