City Gas Distribution
Full Form of CGD
What is CGD?
City Gas Distribution (CGD) refers to the network of pipelines and infrastructure that supplies natural gas to households, commercial establishments, and industrial units in urban and semi-urban areas. In India, CGD is a critical component of the government's strategy to increase the share of natural gas in the primary energy mix from 6.2% to 15% by 2030. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) authorises and regulates CGD entities through bidding rounds for geographical areas (GAs). Major players include Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), and Gujarat Gas Limited. CGD networks deliver piped natural gas (PNG) for cooking and heating, and compressed natural gas (CNG) for transportation. These networks are being rapidly expanded under the 'One Nation One Gas Grid' initiative, connecting thousands of households and CNG stations across the country. The CGD sector offers significant investment opportunities and is central to India's energy transition goals. For students, CGD is a key topic in energy economics and petroleum management exams, including UPSC, GATE, and MBA entrance tests. Understanding CGD helps grasp the operational and regulatory framework of India's downstream gas sector.
