Foreign Medical Graduate
Full Form of FMG
What is FMG?
A Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) refers to an individual who has obtained a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a medical institution outside India and wishes to practice medicine in India. The term is widely used in the context of licensing and registration requirements set by the National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India (MCI). FMGs must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), also known as the Screening Test, to be eligible for provisional or permanent registration with state medical councils. This examination assesses their medical knowledge and ensures they meet Indian standards. FMGs are a significant cohort in India’s healthcare sector, as many Indian students pursue medical education abroad, particularly in countries like China, Russia, Ukraine, and Bangladesh, due to limited seats in domestic medical colleges. The role of FMGs in India is crucial in addressing physician shortages, especially in rural and underserved areas. However, they face challenges such as differences in curriculum, language barriers, and multiple regulatory changes. The FMG pathway is relevant for exams like NEET PG and state postgraduate entrance tests, as FMGs are eligible to appear for them after clearing FMGE. Understanding the FMG designation is essential for medical students and graduates navigating the complex licensure process in India.
