Family Health Unit
Full Form of FHU
What is FHU?
A Family Health Unit (FHU) is a primary healthcare delivery mechanism established under India’s National Health Mission, particularly in rural and underserved areas. It serves as the first point of contact for families, offering preventive, curative, and promotive health services such as immunisation, maternal and child care, family planning, and basic treatment for common illnesses. The FHU is typically staffed by a multi-purpose health worker, a nurse, and sometimes a community health officer, and operates at the sub-centre or panchayat level. It plays a crucial role in reducing the burden on higher-level facilities by managing minor ailments and referring complex cases to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) or Community Health Centres (CHCs). The concept was introduced to strengthen the primary healthcare infrastructure and achieve universal health coverage in India. FHUs are especially significant in states with high maternal and infant mortality rates, where doorstep health services improve access and outcomes. For exam relevance, questions on FHUs appear in UPSC, State PSC, and healthcare recruitment exams under topics like National Health Mission components and rural health infrastructure.
