Free Body Diagram
Full Form of FBD
What is FBD?
A Free Body Diagram (FBD) is a visual representation used in physics and engineering to isolate a single object and show all the external forces acting upon it, including gravity, normal force, tension, friction, and applied forces. In India, FBD is a fundamental tool taught from Class 11 onwards in Physics, particularly in the study of mechanics and Newton's Laws of Motion. It is extensively used in competitive exam preparation for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and NEET, where accurate diagramming is the first step to solving problems involving equilibrium, motion, and dynamics. Students learn to draw FBDs in classrooms and practice sessions, and they appear in textbook examples, board exams, and entrance tests. The skill of constructing correct FBDs is critical for scoring well in the physics section of these exams, as even a minor mistake can lead to incorrect force analysis and wrong answers. Mastering FBDs also builds a strong foundation for higher studies in engineering and applied sciences.
