National Literacy Mission
Full Form of NLM
What is NLM?
The National Literacy Mission (NLM) is a flagship programme of the Government of India, launched on May 5, 1988, with the aim of eradicating illiteracy in the country. Its primary focus is on imparting functional literacy to adults in the 15–35 age group, enabling them to achieve self-reliance and participate actively in national development. Over the years, NLM has evolved through various phases, including the Total Literacy Campaigns and the subsequent Saakshar Bharat Mission. It is implemented primarily through district-level literacy committees and voluntary organizations, often using innovative methods like door-to-door mobilisation, night schools, and the use of local volunteers. The Mission has significantly contributed to raising India’s literacy rate from around 52% in 1991 to over 74% in the 2011 census. In examinations like UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs, questions often appear on the year of launch, target age group, and related programs of NLM, making it an important topic in government schemes and education policy.
