Election Seizure and Watch
Full Form of ESW
What is ESW?
Election Seizure and Watch (ESW) is a mechanism deployed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to monitor, intercept, and seize illegal cash, liquor, drugs, and freebies distributed during election campaigns. Its primary purpose is to enforce the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and ensure free and fair elections. ESW teams comprise flying squads, static surveillance teams, and video monitoring units that work in coordination with law enforcement agencies. The system is activated across constituencies during the entire election period, from notification to polling day. ESW has become increasingly significant in Indian elections to curb money power and illegitimate inducements. For competitive exams like UPSC, state civil services, and Indian Polity, understanding ESW is crucial as it relates to electoral reforms and the ECI's regulatory powers. The mechanism also includes documentation and reporting of seized items, which are deposited with the district election officer. ESW is a key instrument in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process in India.
