Electronic Voting Machine

What is EVM?

An Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is an electronic device used to record and count votes in elections. In India, the EVM was introduced in the late 1980s and has been used in all national and state elections since 2004, replacing traditional paper ballots. The machine consists of a control unit and a ballot unit, connected by a cable. Voters press a button next to the candidate symbol to cast their vote. EVMs are designed to be tamper-proof, with no connectivity to external networks, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has standardized their use across the country, and they are deployed in polling stations from urban centers to remote rural areas. EVMs have significantly reduced the time required for counting votes and minimized errors associated with manual counting. They are accompanied by Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPAT) to allow voters to verify that their vote was recorded correctly. In recent years, the Supreme Court of India has mandated the verification of VVPAT slips in a percentage of polling stations to enhance transparency. For competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, understanding the functioning and controversies surrounding EVMs is essential, as questions often appear in the Polity and Governance sections.
