Electrogastrogram
Full Form of EGC
What is EGC?
An Electrogastrogram (EGC) is a non-invasive medical test that records the electrical activity of the stomach muscles using electrodes placed on the skin over the abdomen. It is used to assess gastric motility disorders such as gastroparesis, dyspepsia, and functional nausea. In India, EGC is increasingly utilized in gastroenterology departments of major hospitals and research institutes, particularly for patients with unexplained upper gastrointestinal symptoms. The test helps doctors evaluate the rhythmic contractions of the stomach (gastric slow waves) and identify abnormalities like tachyarrhythmias or bradyarrhythmia. EGC is often performed when routine endoscopy or imaging fails to provide a diagnosis. For students preparing for medical entrances like NEET PG or speciality exams in gastroenterology, understanding the principles and clinical applications of EGC is essential as it appears in questions related to diagnostic techniques and gastric disorders. The procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes and is painless, involving the patient resting while a computer records the electrical signals. Despite its utility, EGC is not yet widely available in smaller towns due to the need for specialized equipment and trained technicians.
