Explosive Detection Vehicle
Full Form of EDV
What is EDV?
An Explosive Detection Vehicle (EDV) is a specialized mobile platform used by Indian security forces, including the National Security Guard (NSG), state police bomb disposal squads, and paramilitary units, to detect, locate, and neutralize explosive devices. These vehicles are equipped with advanced sensors, X-ray scanners, robotic arms, and communication systems that allow operators to inspect suspicious objects from a safe distance. In India, EDVs are deployed during high-risk events such as VVIP movements, political rallies, Independence Day celebrations, and after specific threat alerts in sensitive zones. They are also used in counter-terrorism operations in regions like Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast. The vehicle enables rapid response without exposing personnel to direct harm, significantly improving security outcomes. The concept aligns with India’s growing emphasis on technology-driven internal security. For competitive exams like UPSC, CAPF, or SSC, understanding the role of EDVs in modern policing and counter-IED operations is useful for questions on security apparatus and defence modernization.
