Improvised Explosive Device

What is IED?

An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is a homemade bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than conventional military action. It is typically fabricated from readily available materials such as fertilizers, fuel, and scrap metal, combined with a detonator. IEDs are a primary weapon in asymmetric warfare, used by insurgents and terrorist groups to cause casualties, damage infrastructure, and create fear. In India, IEDs have been frequently employed in conflict zones such as Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast, and Left-Wing Extremism-affected areas. The Indian armed forces and paramilitary agencies have developed specialized counter-IED units and protocols to detect, disarm, and mitigate these threats. IEDs can be triggered by pressure plates, remote control, timers, or victim-operated mechanisms. They are often hidden in vehicles (VBIEDs), roadside objects, or even disguised as everyday items. Awareness about IEDs is critical for security personnel and civilians in high-risk regions. In defence and civil services exams, questions on IEDs appear under current affairs or security topics, focusing on types, detection methods, and recent incidents. The threat of IEDs remains a significant challenge for India's internal security framework.
